BROADCHURCH bosses have been keeping details of the upcoming third series under lock and key, but we know one thing for certain: there will be no romance between detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller.
DI Hardy actor David Tennant says his character and DS Miller, played by Olivia Colman, may act like a “cranky old married couple”, but as for an actual relationship? “That’s not their bag.”
The Scottish actor, 45, said of the characters at a series three preview event: “They are both damaged individuals, for different reasons, who don’t have any friends and need each other. It’s nice to find them in a different stage of their lives.”
Series three — set to premiere in February— will be the last for the ITV drama, and David said it strikes the “perfect note”, leaving Hardy and Miller “exactly where you’d expect them to be left. There’s great satisfaction.”
The series revolves around a serious sexual assault in the eponymous seaside town, with ex-Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh playing rape victim Trisha Winterman.

Julie, 46, said of Trisha: “She’s an ordinary-looking middle-aged woman, which was interesting. Not your usual young girl being chased through the woods.”
While previous series focused on murders and their aftermath, writer Chris Chibnall said it makes sense to explore a different type of crime in series three.
