DAVID Tennant and Olivia Colman have their work cut out for them as they return as DI Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller in the final series of Broadchurch.
In the dramatic trailer, it becomes clear that the case will be a harrowing and difficult one, as they try to help a distraught Trish find the person who viciously sexually attacked her.
As the clip speeds through the investigation, we discover that Trish was at a party when the attack occurred – leaving a whole heap of suspects on their list of people to rule out.
This includes Trish’s boss Ed Burnett, played by Lenny Henry, as well as a slew of new and old characters that had the ability to commit the unprovoked attack.
The latest trailer came after fans released the first two minutes of the show– and the gripping scene that sees Ellie and Alec coming to get Trish who’s been stunned to silence following her attack.
Sitting silently weeping at the harbour, Ellie and Alec convince her to head to the police station with them.
Julie Hesmondhalgh, who is best known for playing Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street, said she gave it a lot of thought before accepting the role.

Speaking to the Express at a screening last month, she said: “It was a pretty amazing phone call to get and to hear what the story that was going to be explored was something that was really interesting to me and a little bit scary for me.
“Because obviously there’s been a lot of discussion in that time too about the televising of sexual violence and the way that has almost become normalised unfortunately, and putting your face to that is something I really had to think about.”
The new story picks up three years after the conclusion of the second series, when Ellie Miller’s husband Joe was exiled from his former community, despite being acquitted for the murder of schoolboy Danny Latimer.
It has been confirmed that this series is Broadchurch’s last, with fans eager to see how the dark tale will end.
There are a series of loose ends that need tying up on the show – and the gripping crime drama is sure to not disappoint as it reaches its dramatic conclusion.
In series one, the focus was on the search for the boys murderer – and pulled in an average of 9.3million viewers by the end of its eight episode run in 2013.
Series two was released in 2015 and focused on the fallout of the discovery of who killed Danny and why.
At its peak, it pulled in 9.7million viewers, and was greenlit for a third and final series at the show’s end.
- Broadchurch returns to ITV1 at 9pm on Monday, February 27.
